On September 13 and 14, SDM hosted a Smart Cities delegation from Japan. This group included Prof. Atsushi Deguchi , executive director and vice president of the University of Tokyo, as well as academics and representatives from property developers, construction companies, manufacturers, and railways. Led by SDM, the visit was hosted in collaboration with Prof. Kairos Shen of the MIT Center for Real Estate and John Moavenzadeh and Dr. Anson Stewart of the MIT Mobility Inititative.

Dr. Bryan Moser, academic director of SDM, gave a presentation titled “Systems Thinking, AI, and Urban Development.”

Many thanks to my friends in urban planning, construction, real estate and transportation from Japan and my colleagues and students at MIT for joining in this terrific 2 day event 6 weeks ago on smart cities. These intentional transdisciplinary mixes of community are necessary to stimulate new ways of framing our urban systems challenges and new partnerships for innovation.

Bryan Moser

A panel discussion with SDM students followed. The visit also included sessions with the MIT Mobility Initiative and visits to new and recently built developments in the Boston area.
